Oliver Tims
Civil Funeral Celebrant in Surrey
A funeral ceremony is as much for the living as the departed, aiming to provide comfort and closure for those who mourn as well as honouring the memory of their loved one. Each funeral ceremony I lead is a unique creation, taking as a starting point the wishes of the family and the character of the deceased. The process begins with a meeting with the client and any other family members or friends they wish to be present. This usually takes place at the client’s home, but can be held at any location you choose.
Our meeting is a chance to discuss your thoughts about the tone and content of the ceremony and, perhaps most important, to talk in depth about the life, achievements and personality of the deceased. It is always a pleasure for me to hear of anecdotes and memories that conjure the deceased in their prime, and many clients find the process comforting and cathartic. The information I take from this conversation can form the basis of the Eulogy — the focal point of the ceremony — should you wish me to write it.
Before we meet, it is helpful if you have thought about the kind of music and readings you might like to include, although I am very happy to help with ideas or advice. The meeting typically lasts between 90 minutes and two hours, but there is no time limit on how long you need.
I will then write an entirely original ceremony that reflects all that we have discussed and includes any specific elements you require. I will send you a draft of the ceremony for your approval, and we can make any necessary changes. Once you are satisfied that the ceremony is exactly as you wish, I will liaise with the Funeral Director to ensure that elements of the ceremony are clearly understood by everyone involved.
On the day of the funeral, I will be in attendance at the venue 15 minutes before the start, ensuring that everything is in place and ready to meet you on arrival. I will then lead the ceremony as scripted, supporting as necessary any friends or family members who are contributing.
Following the ceremony, I will provide a presentation copy of the full text for you to keep.
